Legoland

Here I bring you the first ever jointly-written Broughtby's European Adventures blog. Since this trip was just Ryan and Sam, I relied on Ryan for content, and Ryan relied on ChaptGPT for the actual writing. Then I came in and edited to actually sound like the way we talk vs. ChatGPT's corny jokes, weird assumptions on how we act as people and strange formatting choices. 😜 I kept some of it purely for entertainment purposes. So here goes:

While Sam and Ryan jetted off for their guys-only adventure in Bilund, Denmark, I had a blissful weekend at home.

Destination: Legoland Billund + Lego House + Lego Masters Academy
Travel mode: Ryan-led logistical operation (translation: one unnecessary airport sprint and one very well-timed lounge stop)
Cast: Sam the Lego Engineer, Ryan the Lounge Strategist, Christine the Peaceful One at Home

This whole weird section above (☝) is directly from ChatGPT and I promise to never subject people to this again.

Pirate-themed hotel with a chest full of Legos - a good start to the trip.

Sam vs. the Lego River
Most kids at the Legoland water play area happily launched boats down the little river. Sam? He declared war on the current and spent hours constructing a dam to stop the flow entirely.

Lego House & Masters Academy
After surviving Legoland, they headed to Lego House, where they enrolled in the Lego Masters Academy: Creative Engineering class. The goal was to build something impressive under expert guidance, but in true Ryan-and-Sam fashion, they basically declared themselves already Lego Masters. Sam showed off techniques he “invented on the spot” and Ryan managed to turn a simple structure into a masterpiece.

Ryan’s Excellent Timing (Sort Of)
In classic Ryan fashion, they rushed to the airport like it was a matter of national security… only to arrive at the gate a full hour before boarding even started.
However, Ryan redeemed himself by guiding them straight into a lounge to relax before the flight — which is code for snacks and pretending this was part of the plan all along.

The Lego Budget (or Lack Thereof) - Ryan claims he set a $100 Lego budget. Sam heard: “Let’s get $200 worth of Legos.” Guess who won?

Meanwhile, Back at Home…
While the guys were away, I hiked in my happy place, the Amsterdam Bos, and enjoyed a house that stayed clean for more than 17 minutes. Photo here of a Lego-free hike:

Trip Verdict

– Sam’s favorite part: Flood prevention engineering at the Lego river and Lego Masters Academy class.
– Ryan’s favorite part: Airport lounge snacks.
– Christine’s favorite part: Silence.

This "Trip Verdict" is also a ChatGPT-added section that I left as written. I may consider including this section in the future - not bad ChatGPT, not bad.

Morocco

For Sam's February school break we went to Morocco.  We were looking for warmth and also ready to explore beyond Europe. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency (amazing resort) in Taghazout, a small fishing village that is south of Marrakesh and north of Agadir.  More Morocco photos here:  https://photos.app.goo.gl/eATCUb6Cc4rRoyLYA February 17:  As per usual we opted for a flight that was not ideal so we could save money.  It was a later flight with a connection through Casablanca, arriving in Agadir airport close to midnight.   Sam slept on the car ride from the airport to the hotel but perked up when we found out we had been upgraded to a room with an ocean view (thanks to friend Jasper!!).  This kid continues in his quest for only the finer things. Very elaborate towel and curtain art! View from our balcony at night: View from our balcony during the day: February 18:  Today was dedicated to nothing except explo...

Milan

(Feb 14 - 17)  The plan for the February school break was to ski in northern Italy for a few days.  With Sam's collarbone injury (see separate blog entry ) we had to pivot.  We had already booked flights to Milan so decided to spend a weekend there.  Ryan and I had been before but not Sam.  More Milan photos here:  https://photos.app.goo.gl/J6rzoDWXCcatyKvg8 We did our typical food tour on our first day in Milan which included Roman-style pizza. Compared to Neapolitan pizza (Napoli), which we usually have in Italy, it is thinner and crispier and has a wider variety of toppings. We had it topped with potatoes.  We discovered Rosso frizzante wine which is a lightly sparkling Barbera wine.  There was also a delicious traditional risotto for Milan.   Barbera + bubbles + thin, crispy pizza + risotto resulted in a very good tour.  Roman-style pizza with potatoes Risotto Milanese On Sunday we toured the  Duomo di Milano  inclu...

Rotterdam

(March 1 - 2) Rotterdam (Netherlands) was added to the travel schedule primarily because Ryan had a free Marriott night that needed to be used before it expired and we all know he won't let that go to waste ($).  It was also our last free weekend before Sam started back with his activities after his collarbone break (see separate blog entry ), mainly Sunday football.  More Rotterdam photos here:  https://photos.app.goo.gl/vA3er7NEqDfAKzzm7 We continued our commitment to food tours in every city we go to.  We had a fear that we might be the only ones on this tour and that fear was realized. That's a lot of pressure to interact with the tour guide. It was supposed to be a 4 hour tour with 6 stops and this tour lasted 5 hours with 7 stops. 😬  I thought the tour guide was going to invite us to his house by the end. But overall it was good with some typical Dutch foods but because Rotterdam is a very international city, there were some unexpected items l...
