Volleyball, Bootcamp, Bikes & Picnics

Now that school has started and we are settling in Amsterdam, we are exploring new activities.

First, Ryan convinced me to come out of volleyball retirement and play on the Saturday meetup he found. I haven't played volleyball since before the pandemic.  This is 3 hours of playing with random people on random teams.  This allows for flexibility and no commitment to play every week which is good.  I lasted 2.5 hours which may be the longest I've ever played volleyball since maybe the days of beach volleyball afternoons in Chicago.  It was hot, I was out of "volleyball shape" and my arms were confused by what was happening to them. I was super bruised and sore. Yes, I did this to myself and will probably do it again.

On Wednesday I signed up for an expat fitness meetup. This was a choice of yoga, bootcamp or boxing in the park.  I chose yoga.  The yoga teacher didn't show up so they offered me a spot in bootcamp which I reluctantly accepted. Similar to volleyball, I was out of "bootcamp shape". 60 minutes of sprints, pushups, mountain climbers and other torturous exercises. My body had barely recovered from volleyball!

On to my next challenge - I bought a bike!  Not the easiest thing for me given there are not too many short-people used bikes available. I found one at a nearby bike shop.  I took it out for a ride the next day to the Amsterdam Bos (forest) which is very nice and quiet and easy to get to from our house (on bike).  Except when I get close to our house and there's a traffic circle where I almost got run over by a bike, car and tram. On day 3 of riding I made the rookie mistake of getting my tire caught on a tram track and went down (both myself and the bike were fine - minor accident).  I have booked bike lessons designed for people learning to bike in Amsterdam. 😀

I had been wanting to do a picnic in Vondelpark since we moved here.  Travel and weather has not allowed it but finally we did it!  We chose a particularly dog-filled section of the park to settle in and eat, read and practice football.  It was delightful since random dogs would come to us for petting and ball throwing as we relaxed with baguettes and brie. Then a very dirty and wet dog ran straight through our picnic leaving paw prints and dirty brie and tomatoes. We recovered and ate dirty food. THEN, a dog peed on Ryan's coffee mug!  😝🐕  Still lovely but lesson learned about picnics in the dog section.

This post sums up a lot about my expat experiences - amazing followed by horrifying!

Morocco

For Sam's February school break we went to Morocco.  We were looking for warmth and also ready to explore beyond Europe. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency (amazing resort) in Taghazout, a small fishing village that is south of Marrakesh and north of Agadir.  More Morocco photos here:  https://photos.app.goo.gl/eATCUb6Cc4rRoyLYA February 17:  As per usual we opted for a flight that was not ideal so we could save money.  It was a later flight with a connection through Casablanca, arriving in Agadir airport close to midnight.   Sam slept on the car ride from the airport to the hotel but perked up when we found out we had been upgraded to a room with an ocean view (thanks to friend Jasper!!).  This kid continues in his quest for only the finer things. Very elaborate towel and curtain art! View from our balcony at night: View from our balcony during the day: February 18:  Today was dedicated to nothing except explo...

Norway

Our final leg of the Scandinavia journey was Norway. We started and ended in Oslo but much of our time was spent exploring the fjords and smaller towns.  More Norway photos here:   https://photos.app.goo.gl/9Lo5sFgQF2ScPYkV8 Wed, 8/20 – Stockholm → Oslo We flew into Oslo later in the day so only enough time for a little exploration and dinner.  One impression I have of Oslo is the social activism, not just with this small protest about fossil fuels, but the general vibe (i.e. graffiti).  All very calm but lots of opinions! The Tiger statue outside the train station. Thu, 8/21 – Oslo → Bergen Not much time in Oslo before we began our exploration of Norway.  This was the most stressful part of planning the trip and why I delegated it to Ryan. It involved piecing together various transportation modes and he thrives in planning trains, buses and water-related transportation.  It was a complex puzzle that mirrored the popular "Norway in a Nutshell" ...

Rotterdam

(March 1 - 2) Rotterdam (Netherlands) was added to the travel schedule primarily because Ryan had a free Marriott night that needed to be used before it expired and we all know he won't let that go to waste ($).  It was also our last free weekend before Sam started back with his activities after his collarbone break (see separate blog entry ), mainly Sunday football.  More Rotterdam photos here:  https://photos.app.goo.gl/vA3er7NEqDfAKzzm7 We continued our commitment to food tours in every city we go to.  We had a fear that we might be the only ones on this tour and that fear was realized. That's a lot of pressure to interact with the tour guide. It was supposed to be a 4 hour tour with 6 stops and this tour lasted 5 hours with 7 stops. 😬  I thought the tour guide was going to invite us to his house by the end. But overall it was good with some typical Dutch foods but because Rotterdam is a very international city, there were some unexpected items l...
